The Young Leaders’ Scheme is just one of the exciting programme elements in the Explorer Scout section. All members working in the Beaver Scout, Cub Scout, or Scout Section who are between the ages of 14 and 17 must be members of the Sheffield Don Young Leaders’ Unit. They are Explorer Scouts who choose to devote a good proportion of their time in Scouting to lead in one of these junior sections, within your Group
The Young Leaders’ Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals. It allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps them fulfil the service elements of their awards.
Sheffield Don Young Leader’s Unit organise any training required by them. The training team consists of a number of Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leaders) that work to not only deliver the various training modules but provide support for the Young Leader in their chosen Section and guide them through the 4 Missions, marking significant stages in the development of their leadership skills.
My responsibilities as a Section Leader:
- Ensure all Young Leaders are registered with the Young Leaders’ Unit at the earliest opportunity, even if they already regularly attend one of the six other Explorer Scout Units in Sheffield Don.
- Ensure all Young Leaders’ complete their Module ‘A’ training within 3 months of becoming a Young Leader. The training team regularly run Module A sessions; these dates can be found in the calendar section of this site, filter the category to “Young Leader” for easier viewing.
- Encourage Young Leaders’ to complete the remaining 10 modules. The Young Leaders’ Unit has planned a 2-year rolling programme meaning that if they miss a Module they will always have another chance to complete it.
- Support Young Leaders through their 4 Missions that are designed to allow them to put into practice the learning from the modules. By doing this they will gain confidence and become a valued part of your leadership team.
